Kenny Burrell is a master of jazz blues guitar playing and Example 11a demonstrates these skills over a simple three chord vamp. Beginning with a sliding double-stop on the downbeat of bar one, note the use of silence before the bluesy 1/16th note hammer-on and pull-off on beat 4.

Bar two uses a melodic motif following the earlier phrase, alternating between 1/8th notes, 1/16th notes and 1/4 notes before another double-stop at the beginning of the final bar. The double-stops conclude the line on beats 3 and 4.

This whole lick relies on the F Blues scale, but the expert use of rhythm really makes it come alive. It is simple and effective, and this is a masterclass in how to make a jazz blues lick really swing.
